Tax Relief Guide

Charitable Donation Deductions

In Singapore, donations to registered charities provide significant tax benefits. Qualifying gifts can reduce your statutory income through a substantial multiplier effect.

Requirement 01

IPC Registration

Only donations to Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) are tax-deductible. Standard charities without IPC status do not qualify for tax relief under IRAS regulations.

Requirement 02

Automatic Filing

Most IPCs transmit donation data directly to IRAS. You must provide your NRIC or FIN to the charity to ensure the deduction appears automatically in your tax portal.

Requirement 03

Receipt Retention

Maintain digital or physical copies of all donation receipts for five years. This documentation is necessary if IRAS requests verification during a routine audit.

The 250% Deduction Multiplier

Singapore offers one of the most generous tax incentives for charitable giving globally. For every dollar donated to a qualifying IPC, you can deduct $2.50 from your total assessable income. This multiplier effectively reduces your taxable base, moving you into a lower tax bracket if the donation is significant.

If your total tax deduction exceeds your income for a specific Year of Assessment (YA), the remaining balance can be carried forward. IRAS allows you to utilize these unabsorbed donations for up to five years, provided there is no substantial change in your status.

It is critical to note that the donation must be made before December 31st to count for the following year's tax assessment. Late contributions will be credited to the subsequent fiscal period without exception.

Non-Cash Contributions

01

Public Shares

Donations of shares listed on the SGX or units in unit trusts are eligible for the 250% deduction based on the market value at the time of transfer.

02

Artifacts and Artworks

Gifts of artifacts to museums with Approved Museum Status qualify. The value must be appraised by an approved valuer to determine the deduction amount.

03

Land and Buildings

Donating immovable property to an IPC is permitted. The deduction is calculated based on the market value as assessed by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore.

Optimize Your Tax Filing

Ensure all your charitable contributions are correctly reflected in your IRAS portal to maximize your annual tax savings.
